Sharjah Wanderers RFC is one of the oldest rugby clubs in the Middle East with a great history. The club has minis, ladies, vets and men’s sections.
Sharjah Wanderers RFC was in fact the start of rugby in the UAE (or the Trucial States in those days) in the illustrious days when the Royal Air Force and British Army were stationed there.
At the time Sharjah fielded numerous teams, however from this came the dark ages, until, in 1974-75 the Sharjah residents began to play the Dubai residents, Sharjah putting up spirited performances in such lo…cal derbies, held in Dubai. Eventually Sharjah laid out their own first pitch at the Contracts Club in 1976, and continued to play Dubai, but now able to host them.
The first evidence of Sharjah Wanderers RFC appeared in the form of the red and black stripped jerseys of Edinburgh Wanderers (care of the partisan organizers). Development continued to a formal meeting of the four founding members (the only ones who turned up) who duly became officers of the club, in September 1976. Thus Sharjah Wanderers RFC was inaugurated and training started immediately with four players.
The club has a complete mini’s section as well as vets, ladies and Men’s teams that all compete in UAERF leagues.
